Plumbing backup emergencies
When the water comes back up.
Backups are what SD Clear Drains specializes in. Here’s what’s going on, what to do in the first few minutes, and what to tell them when you call.
- Hours
- Emergency service day or night, Monday–Saturday
- Response
- Emergency response teams usually arrive within 60 minutes
While you wait
The first few minutes.
Standard, conservative steps. Your safety comes before the floors, and none of this replaces the advice of the person on the phone.
- 01
Stop using water
Everyone in the house. No flushing, showers or sinks, and stop the dishwasher or washing machine if one is running. Whatever goes down a drain now comes back up the lowest one.
- 02
Keep clear of the water
Treat backed-up water as contaminated. Keep children and pets away, wear gloves and boots if you must move anything, and wash well afterwards.
- 03
Safety: Water near power: stay out
Don’t walk through water that has reached outlets, power strips, cords or appliances. Only switch off a circuit at the breaker panel if you can reach it standing on dry ground with dry hands; otherwise leave it to an electrician or your utility.
- 04
Safety: Gas appliances or a gas smell
If water has reached a gas water heater or furnace, or you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 from outside.
- 05
Skip the chemical drain cleaner
It rarely clears a blocked main line, and it leaves caustic water standing in the pipe for whoever opens it next.
- 06
Lift what you can, if it’s safe
Rugs, boxes and anything on the floor nearby. A few photos of the water and the affected rooms are useful for your records.
Why it happens
Water goes to the lowest door.
Every drain in the house feeds the same main line out to the sewer. When that line is blocked, by grease, wipes, roots or damaged pipe, the water still has to go somewhere. It rises until it finds the lowest opening: often a shower, tub, floor drain or ground-floor toilet.
That’s why a backup can show up in a bathroom nobody has used, and why running water anywhere in the house makes it worse.
When you call
Useful things to mention.
- Which fixtures are affected, and where the water is showing up
- Whether it looks like clean water or sewage
- Whether the water has reached anything electrical or a gas appliance
- Where your cleanout is, if you know
- When it started, and anything that happened just before
